Spring bulbs with Laura Silburn

Spring bulbs with Laura Silburn

Suitable for beginners and intermediate painters wishing improve their skills.

Spring flowering bulbs brighten our gardens as we bid farewell to winter. Join this 2-day workshop where, through demonstrations and personal tutoring, Laura will introduce you to guiding principles of botanical art. You will strengthen your drawing and painting techniques, using what you have learned to complete all the preparation work necessary should you wish to go on and produce a finished botanical painting following the course. You will build confidence through increasing your knowledge and perfecting your skills in a relaxed and encouraging environment.

Day 1

- Short introduction on the chosen plant and materials

- Botanical matters – why we need to research and understand the plants we are painting. We will discuss plant classification and how plant parts relate to this, looking at simple plant material and understanding it.

- Drawing techniques

We will practice basic line drawing, how to draw accurately including measuring, drawing simple shapes clearly and think about how these shapes relate to forms in nature. We will then look at how to use tone to make our drawings three-dimensional and discover how lighting our subject well can help create an effective image. Simple exercises will help us practice and perfect our techniques. We will then use what we have learnt to draw our plant material and explore how we might transfer our drawings to watercolor paper.

Day 2

- Painting techniques

We will discuss the materials needed for painting and why we use them. We will explore through experimentation and practice how to manipulate paint and water sensitively and with control, using techniques such as layering washes. We will explore color mixing and practice matching paint to our plant material, testing colors and making notes to ensure we accurately capture the growing plant. Before we finish we will look at the material we have produced and discuss how this can be used to produce a finished piece of artwork.
